Dalhousie
Memorial Arena is home of the Dalhousie Tigers varsity men's
and women's hockey teams and the Dalhousie Superskills Hockey Schools.
It is located at the corner of LeMarchant and South Streets (at the east end
of Wickwire Field) and houses a regulation North American size ice surface
(200' x 85'), with a seating capacity of 1,146 and standing room for over 200.
Officially named and opened on November 11, 1982, to recognize and honour Canadians
who have served and in memory of those who gave their lives in defence of Canada,
this building replaces the former Memorial Rink which burned down in the
spring of 1978, two days after spring convocation.
The arenas' hyperbolic paraboloid, curved and coned wooden roof structure
makes it stand out on campus. This design was chosen for its inherent strength
and improved acoustics. It also provides greater inside space and an enhanced
setting for events when the ice is removed.
